How to Shoot Skeet
The Game of Skeet consists of two skeet houses and twenty-five clay targets. The “High House” on the left throws targets from a height of 10 feet. The “Low House” on the right throws targets from a height of 3 ½ feet. These targets cross above the “Center Stake” within a 30- inch circle centered 16 feet above the Center Stake.
The shooter then shoots from eight different shooting stations around the skeet field. Stations 1 through 7 are in a semicircle 21 yards from the Center Stake with Station 1 located below the High House window and ending with Station 7 next to the Low House window. Typical stations are 3 by 3 feet in size. Station 8 is located between the High and Low House and is 16 feet from the center stake. Here there are typically two 3 by 3 feet pads representing Station 8. The shooter will always stand on the pad farthest away from the house where the target will be emerging.
Due to the Shooter’s close proximity to the targets; Skeet, Improved Cylinder or Cylinder chokes are highly recommended. A general strategy in Skeet shooting is to shoot all targets on your half of the Skeet field. That is to shoot the “Going-Away-Target” before it reaches the Center Stake and the “In-Coming-Target” after it passes the Center State.
Station 1
Shooter will shoot at four targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house and last a set a double whereas the shooter will shoot the (going away) High House target first.
Station 2
Shooter will shoot at four targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house and last a set a double whereas the shooter will shoot the (going away) High House target first.
Station 3
Shooters will shoot at two targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house.
Station 4
Shooters will shoot at two targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house.
Station 5
Shooters will shoot at two targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house.
Station 6
Shooter will shoot at four targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house and last a set a double whereas the shooter will shoot the (going away) Low House target first.
Station 7
Shooter will shoot at four targets consisting of a single from the high house, followed by a single from the low house and last a set a double whereas the shooter will shoot the (going away) Low House target first.
Station 8
All shooters in the squad will shoot the High House target before proceeding on to the Low House target. The shooter will stand on the 3 by 3-foot station furthest from the High House, load one shell and shoot the High House target before it passes the center stake. After all shooters in the squad have shot the High House, shooters will then take turns shooting the Low House target. The shooter will stand on the 3 x 3-foot station furthest from the Low House, load one shell and shoot the Low House target before it passes the Center Stake.
Option
When a shooter misses his/her first target, they will shoot the first missed target over as their Option. If a shooter has not missed, then the shooter will repeat the Low House target from Station 8 for a “Twenty-Five Straight”. Shooters that are still straight may load two shells when shooting station 8 Low House.
